Cate Blanchett Launches Free Tool to Help People Protect Their Identity From AI

Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett has launched a free online tool that allows people to decide whether artificial intelligence (AI) can use their identity.

Called the Human Consent Registry, the website lets users choose if AI systems can use their name, voice, image, likeness, body movements and other personal features. People can give permission, set conditions for how their information is used, or refuse permission altogether.

Blanchett introduced the new registry at the European Parliament in Brussels during an event hosted by Bulgarian Member of the European Parliament Eva Maydell. Film director Steven Soderbergh also attended the launch.

“Your identity is your IP in the age of AI, and every person deserves the right to decide how AI can or cannot use it,” Blanchett said.

The registry was created by RSL Media, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Blanchett that develops tools to help people give or withhold consent before AI uses their identity. While the registry currently focuses on personal identity, the organization says it plans to expand the platform so people can also protect creative works, fictional characters, and brands.

Maydell described the registry as a way to make people’s rights clearer while keeping human creativity at the center of technological progress.

Blanchett has been outspoken about the need for stronger rules around artificial intelligence. In 2025, she joined more than 400 artists, including Paul McCartney and Ben Stiller, in urging the U.S. government not to weaken copyright protections for creators. The group argued that AI companies should not be allowed to train their systems on copyrighted work without permission or compensation.

Concerns about AI using people’s work and identity without consent have continued to grow. Singer SZA recently said she discovered more than 200 of her songs had been used to train AI, while actor Matthew McConaughey has trademarked his image, voice, and famous catchphrase to help prevent AI misuse.

Blanchett says that as AI technology continues to grow, consent should always come first.
